How to get from Santorini Airport to Oia

The island of Santorini has long been an idyllic getaway, popular with honeymooners, families, and solo travelers alike. One of the most popular spots on the island is the village of Oia, famous as one of the best sunrise spots in the world. There’s also lots of hotels and accommodation options for travelers. Getting from the airport to Oia can be a little complicated, since Santorini is a small island with fewer roads and people than in Greece’s big cities. However, there are plenty of options available, so if you plan ahead and know what to expect, you should have no problem getting to Oia.

Santorini Airport to Oia by Bus

The first and cheapest option is public transport. Santorini has a small network of buses that are a good choice for those traveling on a budget. Taking public transport on Santorini may not be the best option if you’ll be dealing with jet lag, as the journey is not well-marked, and you’ll have to deal with transfers and possibly a longer travel time.

First, you’ll have to take a 10-minute bus ride to the town of Fira. Then, you’ll transfer to another bus, which will take you to your destination of Oia in 20 minutes. Buses leave the airport and Fira roughly every 60 to 75 minutes, so be aware you may be stuck with a long waiting time. Each bus has a storage compartment for luggage, but once you arrive, you may have to carry it a ways to your hotel. In total, the ride usually takes at least 50 minutes, and the price is only €3.50, by far the cheapest option.

Santorini Airport to Oia by Taxi

Taxi can be a more convenient option if you’re not keen on waiting for the bus. There is a designated taxi stand outside the Arrivals area, so you’ll have no problem finding a ride. However, Santorini’s airport is quite small, and can get quite overwhelmed if multiple planes disembark at the same time. This means the range of time you might be waiting for a taxi can vary wildly.

Outside of peak times, you could grab a ride in just a few minutes, but if the airport is busier, that time could stretch past 30 minutes or longer. If you’re in a small group, the driver may ask you to share with another party because of this.

Be aware, that both of you will still pay the full fare; you won’t split the bill with the other group. The taxis are metered, so the price should be around €30-40, with higher fares past 1:00am. The total journey should take around 25 minutes.

Santorini Airport to Oia by Pre-Booked Transfer

To avoid the hassle of waiting for a taxi or bus completely, opt for a pre-booked transfer. There are several options to do this. You can arrange a private service, to come get you, or call a shuttle service, where you’ll share a minibus with other travelers. Some hotels can also arrange a taxi or car transfer for you for an extra fee. The drive takes as long as the taxi, but will be slightly more expensive due to the private service. If you’d just prefer to have some peace of mind when you arrive, it may be worth it.
